History of Plastic Surgery
In 600 BC, the famous Indian surgeon 'Susrutha'
pursued plastic surgery. He has described skin grafting, surgery on nose and
ears for restoring shape. The work performed by Sushruta is compiled in the
book 'Sushruta Samhita'. World literature acknowledges that the origin of
plastic surgery is from India.
During the 18th century Plastic surgery in India was performed by Kumhaars
(Potters) the method on "Classical Indian Rhinoplasty" a method of
restoring cut nose by skin taken from forehead was Published in Gentleman's
Magazine in October 1794. The procedure is still used in the same form and
is called "Classical Indian forehead Rhinoplasty".
During the 1st century BC, Romans restore the injured and smashed ears. In
the mid of 15 th century Branca family from Cicily(Italy) Used Indian method
of Rhinoplasty and also described methods of reconstructing nose and ears
from arm skin.
